The Onset of Blindness

Jonathan recalls the day he noticed something was wrong with his vision. He woke up to find his sight fading to white, a situation that left him disoriented and fearful. Despite numerous visits to hospitals, no clear cause was identified. His blindness led to significant life changes, impacting his education and social interactions.

Education Amidst Hardship

Despite his condition, Jonathan was determined to pursue his education. He faced numerous rejections before finally gaining admission to the University of Calabar, where he studied Political Science. Navigating university life was difficult, with Jonathan relying on the kindness of fellow students to help him get to classes and lectures. Jonathan’s story is shared by three of his siblings: Ruth, Samson, and Anderson. Each of them experienced a similar sudden onset of blindness during their secondary school years. Samson, 34, lost his sight partially at seven and completely at the age of 14. Their mother, Virginia Echefu, believes the blindness afflicting her children is a result of a spiritual attack. After losing her husband, she has had to fend for her children alone, trading crayfish to make ends meet. Her grief and determination are evident as she continues to hope for a better future for her children.

Dr. Anthony Okpobrisi, a chief consultant ophthalmologist, suggests that the siblings’ condition may be hereditary.
