Speaking at the Justice Anthony Aniagolu’s Memorial Lecture held at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Obi recounted his experience during the lecture themed “The Judiciary and the Future of Nigeria.”
He recounted winning the election in Anambra State, only for another candidate to be declared the winner. However, he pursued justice through the courts, spending three years in litigation. Eventually, he was reinstated to power by the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, despite facing impeachment and subsequent elections.
Obi emphasized the crucial role of incorruptible and independent judges in upholding the rule of law. However, he lamented the current state of the judiciary in Nigeria, describing it as weakened and compromised by the executive and influential interests.
Highlighting the significance of a robust judiciary in combating criminality and safeguarding democracy, Obi stressed the need for judicial independence to maintain the rule of law. He criticized the tendency for individuals to approach the judiciary seeking justice but ending up disappointed due to compromise and lack of integrity.
In his view, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not the primary issue in Nigeria, the judiciary plays a pivotal role in ensuring justice and preserving democratic principles.
