Segun Sowunmi, Convener of The Alternative, has strongly refuted claims regarding President Bola Tinubu’s health, condemning critics who eagerly spread negative rumors as engaging in self-hate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Thursday at a town hall meeting in the Ijebu North East Local Government Area of Ogun State, Sowunmi criticized individuals who choose to celebrate national setbacks instead of acknowledging progress and major international investments flowing into the country.

Addressing recent speculations that the President skipped the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) due to health issues or incapacity, Sowunmi dismissed the narrative entirely, asserting, “The president is in good health. The president is in sound mind.” He explained that having the Vice President represent the nation at UNGA is entirely standard, especially when prioritizing critical national economic interests over photo opportunities.

Sowunmi specifically pointed to monumental achievements—such as a $700 billion gas investment and a $17 billion seaport project earmarked for Ogun State—arguing that abandoning such economic milestones just to attend a conference would be unwise. He further accused opposition politicians and rival presidential aspirants of bitterness, noting that they consistently ignore positive developments and only celebrate minor national challenges.

Concluding his address, he called on Nigerians to reject mischief-makers and foster unity to drive national growth, while also reaffirming his political alignment with President Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Ogun East senatorial ambitions.

    • The Allegation: In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Amaechi asserted that his mother was healthy prior to Tinubu’s presidency. He stated that the subsequent economic hardship, driven by policies such as the fuel subsidy removal, created a situation where his family could no longer afford the essential medication his mother needed[cite: 1].

    • Broader Criticism: Amaechi argued that the subsidy removal, which was intended to improve living conditions, has instead exacerbated the suffering of the Nigerian people[cite: 1].

    • Political Rebuttal: The presidency was quick to respond. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, dismissed Amaechi’s claims and the ADC’s electoral ambitions. Onanuga stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Amaechi is aware that his joint ticket with ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is unlikely to succeed in the 2027 election[cite: 2].

    • Past Statements: Adding a layer of political irony, Onanuga also pointed to a previous interview where Amaechi himself critiqued Atiku’s electability, noting Atiku’s history of winning party primaries but failing to secure a general election victory since 1992[cite: 2].
