In an official statement released Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that physical presence in the Federal Capital Territory is not a prerequisite for governance in modern times.
Strategic Engagements and UNGA Attendance
Onanuga highlighted that the President continues to manage state affairs remotely, noting recent high-level business engagements in France—including discussions surrounding a $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun Waterside.
Addressing criticism regarding the President’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the Presidency noted that several world leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, similarly delegated representation to senior officials without controversy.
“Nigeria’s President is hale and hearty,” Onanuga stated. “He has been on a working vacation, which he is perfectly entitled to. In this digital age, he does not need to be physically present in Abuja to do the work for which he was elected in 2023.”
Return Scheduled for Independence Anniversary
Dismissing queries from opposition figures regarding the President’s itinerary, Onanuga confirmed that President Tinubu is scheduled to return to Nigeria this week.
He noted that the President will observe Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary in Lagos and attend the premiere of a feature movie honoring the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
