OK Movement Draws Battle Line With NDC Over Support Group Registration
Tensions have emerged between the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and independent political support networks—specifically the OK Movement—following a directive by the party regarding group registrations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
The NDC’s Stance: In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, the NDC announced that support group registrations are completely free and warned its state chapters against charging fees to groups seeking registration.
-
The OK Movement’s Pushback: John Ughulu, Director-General of the OK Movement, firmly rejected the registration process. He stressed that the movement operates as an independent political entity and will not surrender its structure or internal governance to the NDC.
-
Legal and Structural Arguments: Ughulu argued that neither Nigerian law nor the NDC constitution grants the party authority over an independent organization. He vowed to resist any perceived intimidation, coercion, or attempts to dissolve or appropriate the movement’s leadership.
-
Perspective from the Kwankwasiyya Movement: Habibu Muhammed attributed the friction to the growing pains of an emerging political party attempting to set up new structures. He noted that movements like Kwankwasiyya and the Obidients have historically maintained operational independence.
-
The Ultimate Goal (The Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket): Muhammed emphasized that despite structural disagreements, all factions share the same objective: ensuring the success of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. He urged the NDC to foster an accommodating environment rather than imposing unnecessary restrictions, noting that many grassroots supporters align with the candidates rather than a specific political party.

-
The Campaign Council Backlash: Discontent grew among several state chief executives following the rollout of the heavy 223-member presidential campaign council list, with sidelined governors claiming they were marginalized in key structural placements.
-
Direct Appeals to Tinubu: Unhappy governors sought out President Bola Tinubu to push for a comprehensive review of the council’s composition, warning that structural oversight could hurt effective grassroots campaign coordination ahead of the polls.

Fears of Local Disconnect: The governors argue that excluding major local stakeholders from central campaign operations risks fracturing party unity at the state level, where they must secure ground support for the upcoming elections.
-
Broader Political Anxieties: Beyond the campaign list, underlying tensions involve fears of cross-party alignment pressures and the delicate coordination needed between presidential and separate gubernatorial election timelines.
-
Presidency’s Stance: Despite intense behind-the-scenes lobbying and localized frustration, the Presidency has maintained that party unity remains solid, signaling confidence that structural adjustments will satisfy aggrieved stakeholders without destabilizing the camp.
