“Forget the Trafic: Deputy Gov Hamzat Declares Lagos Traffic Isn’t A Problem, It’s A ‘Lifestyle’!”

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has offered a fresh perspective on the city’s legendary gridlock, describing it not as a problem, but as an integral part of the Lagos lifestyle.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Saturday at Podfest Naija—a gathering for storytellers, digital creators, and media innovators—Hamzat argued that the state’s traffic situation has helped define Lagos’ unique identity and fueled its creative economy.

Traffic: The Unlikely Sponsor of Podcasts

Hamzat highlighted how hours spent in traffic have unexpectedly boosted the local audio and podcasting industry, with commuters turning to digital content during long drives across the city.

“Anyone who has crossed Third Mainland Bridge at 6 p.m. knows that Lagos traffic is not the problem; it is just a lifestyle,” Hamzat remarked. “In fact, I suspect that many of us in this room produce things that are consumed, episode by episode, between Ojota and Obalende. So in a way, traffic has been a patron of your industry. You must celebrate traffic—that’s why we are Lagos.”

He added that the energy and apparent chaos of the city have long served as a creative spark for filmmakers, authors, and visual artists.

From Local Stories to Global Stage

The Deputy Governor emphasized that local creators are no longer letting outsiders control the city’s narrative. Instead, podcasters, designers, tech entrepreneurs, and musicians are using their platforms to broadcast the Lagos story directly to the world.

However, Hamzat cautioned creators against relying solely on audience metrics, stressing the importance of building sustainable revenue models:

“A podcast with a million listeners and no business model is just a hobby with a good microphone.”

To back this creative drive, he revealed that the Lagos State Government is currently funding at least 90 research and development projects to support innovation and help turn viable ideas into successful enterprises.

Safety as the Foundation for Creativity

Addressing the environment needed for innovation, Hamzat noted that artistic expression requires both security and freedom. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to maintaining peace across the state.

“Creativity flourishes best when people feel safe,” he said. “Lagos is today the safest state in our country—and it comes at a ridiculous cost, because if we’re not safe, we can’t even tell stories.”

Concluding his address, Hamzat urged Nigerians to embrace and preserve their cultural heritage, calling local identity a key driver of national growth and economic prosperity.
