“FOOTBALL HALTED: Shocking 16-Day International Break Set To Freeze The Premier League!”
The English Premier League (EPL) is experiencing its longest international break in history this season, with top-flight action pausing for 16 days spanning September and October. The extended break commences following Matchweek 5 on September 20, with league fixtures scheduled to resume on October 10 for Matchweek 6.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This unusual break stems from FIFA’s decision to merge the traditional September and October international windows into a single, extended period running from September 21 to October 6. Unanimously approved by the FIFA Council in 2023 with player welfare in mind, the restructuring aims to minimize the disruption caused by frequent travel.
According to the Premier League, the new calendar reduces the frequency of long-distance intercontinental travel for players representing African and South American nations while based in Europe. Additionally, it cuts the number of mid-season breaks between the start of the season and the end of the year from three to two. Instead of the previous format—which featured four nine-day windows (September, October, November, and March) with two matches each—national teams will now play four matches during this consolidated 16-day window.
Because players returning from international duty typically do not feature for their clubs until the following weekend, the actual break feels significantly longer. To accommodate this, the Premier League announced that matches will not be scheduled for Monday nights immediately before an international break, nor on Friday nights immediately after one.
Global Fixture Breakdown
-
September–October Window (September 21 – October 6): European nations participate in UEFA Nations League matches, African countries continue AFCON qualification campaigns, CONCACAF teams play friendlies and group-stage games, while Asian and South American nations feature in friendlies.
-
November Window (November 9–17): Positioned between Matchweeks 10 and 11, this window features European UEFA Nations League fixtures, African AFCON qualifiers, and CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals alongside friendlies for Asian and South American sides.
-
March Window (March 22–30): Falling between Matchweeks 30 and 31, this final break of the season includes the start of EURO 2028 qualifying, UEFA Nations League knockout matches and playoffs, ongoing AFCON qualifiers, and the CONCACAF Nations League final.
The current international-break structure originates from the “FIFA International Match Calendar” introduced in 2002 ahead of the 2006 World Cup qualification cycle. Although discussions have taken place regarding further reducing international breaks, the current framework is expected to remain in place until at least 2030.
