The Battle For The Ballot: Osun’s 2027 Results Will Prove If Nigerians Can Defeat Vote-Buying.
The recent Osun State governorship election has sparked national conversations about voter resolve heading into the 2027 general elections. In the election, incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party secured victory with 511,067 votes across 19 local government areas, defeating the APC’s Bola Oyebamiji, who garnered 444,815 votes across 11 local government areas, while the ADC’s Najeem Salaam came in third with 17,180 votes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
While political analysts and civil society groups noted that high voter turnout exceeding 40 percent and active local vigilance helped residents counter intimidation and financial influence, observers remain divided on whether this localized resilience can be successfully replicated nationwide. Key tactics observed in Osun included high turnout, citizens staying behind to track votes from polling units to collation centers, and a “Collect and Vote Your Conscience” approach where voters accepted distributed items or cash while still voting for their preferred candidates.
Despite these grassroots strategies, the election’s aftermath has drawn contrasting political narratives:
-
Attributions to the Presidency: Following his victory, Governor Adeleke visited the Presidential Villa to thank President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a fair and equitable electoral environment. Similarly, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike remarked that the outcome reflected the President’s preference rather than a lack of popularity for the opposition.
-
Concerns Over Electoral Violence and Machinery: PDP chieftain Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse warned that the 2027 general elections could be bloody, arguing that Governor Adeleke only triumphed because the strong Adeleke political dynasty and incumbent apparatus could match the ruling party’s aggressive tactics “force for force.”
-
The Weaponization of Poverty: Former ActionAid Nigeria Country Director Ene Obi criticized politicians for exploiting severe economic hardship—noting that millions live below the poverty line—to buy votes with small sums like N15,000. She urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee voting privacy and called for deeper voter education and active citizenship to break the cycle.

Abioye Kamarudeen Adesina, the State Controller of Corrections, addressed attendees at the graduation event, noting that the initiative was put together through a collaboration between the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) and the Kastenbeelo Computer Training Institute.
According to Adesina, digital literacy will significantly enhance the participants’ prospects of securing a livelihood and achieving self-sufficiency upon re-entering society. He emphasized that rehabilitation is a foundational duty of the Correctional Service, asserting that individuals in custody must receive avenues to construct better futures.
