Minister McKenzie explained that he demanded the state funds back due to growing frustration over the lack of visible progress toward integrating VAR into the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The intervention follows mounting pressure and calls for VAR from stakeholders after several high-profile refereeing errors in the Betway Premiership.

Providing background to the initiative, McKenzie noted that he previously took a delegation of journalists, sports administrators, and team officials to Spain and the United Kingdom to evaluate different systems and determine the best approach for South Africa.

Speaking to media representatives following the 19th South African Sport Awards at Sun City, McKenzie confirmed that his department formally requested the return of the state funds, leading SAFA to ask for a 21-day grace period to resolve the matter.

Expressing deep frustration with the delay, the minister emphasized his accountability for public resources, stating, “I asked them in a letter to bring back my money, the money of the state, because I am responsible for it.”

Despite the current standoff, McKenzie reiterated his absolute commitment to bringing VAR to South African football, signaling that he remains prepared to explore alternative pathways if necessary to see the technology successfully introduced.
