The incident unfolded shortly after the governor visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, to present his Certificate of Return following a visit to the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to eyewitness accounts reported by The PUNCH, armed attackers arriving in an unregistered Sienna space bus opened fire near the palace exit, damaging the main entrance gate. The governor’s security detail quickly responded, engaging the assailants in a gunfight that lasted roughly 12 to 15 minutes before the attackers retreated toward the Ita Olokan area along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road.
The sudden gunfire caused widespread panic among local traders and residents, who scrambled for safety and abandoned their shops.
Confirming the attack, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, stated that the governor’s security personnel successfully repelled the hoodlums, confirming that no casualties were recorded.

Protest and Allegations of Illegal Sales
During a peaceful protest at the disputed Okpuijikara land, community members warned that the situation threatens imminent violence and widespread hunger. Speaking on behalf of the village, the spokesperson, Onyekachi Igbojionu, alleged that a few individuals secretly allocated ancestral farmlands—reserved for farming and future housing—to private estate developers without the community’s consent.
Igbojionu noted that these actions persist in defiance of an existing court order issued by Justice A.U. Kalu of the Abia State High Court, Umuahia, under suit number HU/163/2022. Furthermore, residents expressed deep concern that local school lands have also been targeted for unauthorized distribution.
Appeal to Governor Alex Otti
The community appealed directly to Governor Alex Otti to intervene and prevent bloodshed, emphasizing their commitment to using legal, peaceful, and judicial means to protect their heritage. Echoing these concerns, Mrs. Janeth Nwagboso stated that women are now too fearful to farm on the land, worsening local unemployment and hunger.
It is noteworthy that the Abia State government previously acknowledged receiving petitions regarding the land dispute on June 3, 2026, pledging to pursue an amicable resolution.
