Edo Assembly Gets New Speaker, Principal Officers After Agbebaku’s Resignation (Full List).

Following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku amid internal tensions and looming impeachment threats, Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, has been sworn in as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The leadership change took place during Monday’s plenary session. Deputy Speaker Osamwonye Atu formally announced the receipt of Agbebaku’s resignation, clearing the way for Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East) to nominate Idiaye for the role, with Eric Okaka (Owan East) seconding the motion. The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office.

In addition to the new Speaker, the Eighth Assembly underwent a broader leadership reshuffle. Following a directive from the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter, Sunday Ojiezele was named the new Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor (Igueben Constituency) took the role of Deputy Majority Leader. The House also confirmed Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader, finalizing a completely revamped leadership structure for the legislature.

Following a sustained investigation, authorities apprehended the suspect on August 14, 2026, successfully recovered the child, and reunited the baby with the biological mother. State Commissioner of Police CP Umar Hadejia commended the operatives for their professionalism, while police confirmed that the suspect will face charges in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
