The incident occurred at Unit 003, Iroyin Ayo Open Space, Ward 004, in Ejigbo, shortly after Salaam and his wife had cast their ballots. The sudden eruption of violence caused widespread panic, forcing INEC officials, voters, observers, and journalists to flee the scene for safety.
According to Vanguard, security operatives immediately whisked the ADC candidate away to ensure his protection.
In the wake of the disturbance, the voting process was officially suspended. Electoral officials abandoned the polling unit, citing immediate safety concerns. While operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) arrived shortly thereafter to restore calm, they too departed as the situation remained highly tense.
The disruption has left many voters disenfranchised. Adewale, a voter who arrived early to cast his ballot, expressed frustration over the situation. “I came here early because I wanted to vote and return home. But after the crisis started, everybody ran away. Now the INEC officials and security men have left. We don’t know what will happen next,” he lamented.
Another voter, who requested anonymity, echoed this sentiment, stating that the violence had prevented numerous eligible citizens from exercising their civic rights. “We have been here since morning. We want to vote, but nobody is conducting the election anymore. The security people who came to restore order have also left,” the voter said.
