Nigeria’s ambassador to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK), has strongly criticized recent remarks made by prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, who asserted that Nigeria is an Islamic nation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a widely circulated video from a religious gathering, Sheikh Jingir told his congregation that citizens who oppose a Muslim-Muslim political ticket should consider leaving the country because it belongs to them.

Responding through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, FFK dismissed the assertions, characterizing them as deeply provocative and an unsafe path for national unity. He emphasized that such statements must be avoided, reiterating that Nigeria operates as a secular and multi-religious nation.

Addressing political discourse around upcoming electoral tickets, FFK argued that support for a same-faith ticket stems entirely from the competence, character, sincerity, and delivery capacity of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, rather than their religious affiliation.

Key Excerpts from FFK’s Statement:

  • “Kindly take note that it is a very slippery and dangerous slope to take and is best avoided. Nigeria is NOT a Muslim country, and neither is she a Christian country.”

  • “She is a SECULAR and MULTI-RELIGIOUS state comprising BOTH Christians and Muslims in equal numbers and that is our strength.”

  • “We are supporting a Muslim/Muslim ticket for 2027, as we did in 2023, only because of the calibre, ability, sincerity of purpose, character, utility and electoral strength of our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates…”

  • “One day we may have a Christian/Christian ticket too because with God all things are possible.”
