The incident occurred at Ward 5, Okelisa, Amudipe Street in Akure, where supporters of the incumbent senator representing the district, Adeniyi Adegbomire, were reportedly attacked.
Adegbomire, who is contesting for the APC ticket, allegedly escaped after his vehicle was shot at by the attackers.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants fired gunshots into the air and wielded machetes, causing panic among voters, journalists, traders, and pupils of Ebenezer Primary School, who fled the area for safety.
The attack also disrupted the counting process at the ward level.
Speaking to journalists, Adegbomire described the exercise as a “charade,” alleging that the process was compromised after it became clear he was leading in the vote count.
He claimed that while sorting and counting began peacefully, tensions escalated when his supporters appeared to be ahead, prompting an invasion by thugs who fired shots and attacked participants.
The senator alleged that his vehicle was hit by bullets and that several people were assaulted during the chaos, which forced the suspension of the exercise.
He further accused the attackers of targeting his supporters across the senatorial district and attempting to intimidate voters during the primaries.
Adegbomire maintained that the violence was orchestrated to frustrate his chances after he reportedly led early counting in his ward.
