“Mistaken Identity” — Presidency Clears Air On ISIS Commander Death Controversy.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed claims that Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, the senior ISWAP commander recently neutralised in a joint Nigeria-United States military operation, had already been killed in an earlier strike.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement posted on on Saturday, Onanuga explained that reports linking Al-Manuki’s death to a 2024 military operation were based on mistaken identity.

He noted that although Al-Manuki’s name previously appeared among suspected ISWAP commanders reportedly eliminated during 2024 operations around the Birnin Gwari forest axis in Kaduna State, security agencies have now confirmed that the earlier report was inaccurate.

According to Onanuga, intelligence findings showed that Birnin Gwari was never part of Al-Manuki’s known operational territory, undermining the credibility of the previous assessment.

He said doubts surrounding the recent successful joint operation were misplaced, stressing that the latest mission was backed by more advanced intelligence and extensive surveillance.

Onanuga revealed that security agencies had been tracking Al-Manuki since December 2025 through prolonged Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), communications monitoring, phone intercepts, and human intelligence.

He added that operatives initially aimed to capture him alive, which explained why he was monitored across several locations, including Abuja and Maiduguri, before the final strike was carried out.

The presidential aide said the operation involved months of digital surveillance and coordinated intelligence efforts designed to avoid exposing the mission too early.

He emphasized that, unlike previous incidents where battlefield reports were later revised, this strike involved multiple layers of target verification, precision planning, and multi-source intelligence confirmation before final approval.

Onanuga maintained that security authorities are confident in the outcome, insisting that this latest operation leaves no room for uncertainty regarding Al-Manuki’s elimination.
