The mission was first disclosed by US President Donald Trump and later confirmed on Saturday by President Bola Tinubu.
Trump described the strike as a highly complex joint military operation executed by American and Nigerian forces.
According to The New York Times, Al-Minuki was killed during a helicopter-led assault involving roughly two dozen Nigerian and US special operations personnel, including operatives from the US Navy’s SEAL Team 6.
Quoting three unnamed US officials, the report said the joint force launched the assault on Al-Minuki and dozens of ISIS fighters hiding on two small islands within the Lake Chad Basin.
The Lake Chad region, which borders Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, has remained a major hotspot for insurgency and extremist violence.
The report stated that the original objective was to capture Al-Minuki alive.
However, when it became evident that he would not surrender and might evade capture, officials said an airstrike was authorised.
The strike reportedly destroyed his compound in the Lake Chad Basin.
No casualties were recorded among Nigerian or American troops during the operation.
President Tinubu had also revealed that several senior lieutenants associated with the ISIS commander were killed during the mission.
He commended the strong security partnership between Nigeria and the United States, expressing hope for more coordinated offensives against terrorist networks.
Tinubu said he anticipates further decisive operations targeting terrorist strongholds across the country.
The New York Times further reported that investigators recovered electronic materials, including mobile phones and laptops, from the operation site.
Security analysts are currently examining the devices for intelligence linked to ISIS recruitment, financing, and operational networks across Africa and beyond.
The United States officially designated Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki as a specially designated global terrorist in 2023.
Before his death, he was believed to play major strategic roles within ISIS, particularly in international financing and communications.
