Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has raised serious concern over the recent abduction of dozens of schoolchildren by armed groups in parts of northern and southern Nigeria, calling on authorities to urgently rescue the victims and strengthen security in schools nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Sunday, the group described the incidents as “alarming,” noting that schools, children, and entire communities were targeted within a few days.

Amnesty International stated that at least 82 schoolchildren were abducted between May 13 and May 15, 2026, in separate attacks in Borno and Oyo States.

According to the organisation, 42 pupils were kidnapped on May 13 and 14 when armed men attacked schools in Askira Uba and Chibok Local Government Areas of Borno State in the northeast.

It further reported that another 40 schoolchildren were taken on May 15 after gunmen invaded communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The affected institutions include Primary and Government Day Junior Secondary School (GDSS) Mussa, Local Authority School in Askira Uba, as well as Ahoro-Esinele Community Grammar School and Ahoro-Esinele Community Grammar School in Oriire LGA.

Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to immediately investigate the attacks, rescue all abducted victims, and put stronger preventive measures in place to stop repeated targeting of schools and children.

The organisation warned that some of the abducted children were as young as two years old, adding that continued attacks on schools are deepening Nigeria’s education crisis.

It also noted that many kidnapped children and teachers are never released, while fear of abduction is forcing millions of children out of school.

Amnesty further accused authorities of failing to properly investigate past school abductions or prosecute perpetrators, saying victims and their families are often denied justice and accountability.

The group maintained that the government’s inability to guarantee the safety of citizens violates both Nigeria’s constitutional obligations and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
