The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has expressed strong confidence in the power of Nigerian voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Wednesday at the Oyo State Tourism Summit held at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre (ICC), Makinde said he believes federal influence will not determine the outcome of the next election.
He maintained that Nigerians are now more politically aware and ready to freely choose their leaders regardless of pressure or interference.
According to him, “I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti state in both instances, but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper.
“They will show us that they don’t want to be bystanders anymore; they will participate, and I’m sure of what I’m saying.”
On governance after his tenure, Makinde said his administration has put structures in place to ensure continuity in Oyo State.
He explained that while he may recommend a successor, the final decision rests solely with the people of the state.
The governor cautioned, however, that electing an unqualified candidate could have long-term consequences for the state’s development.
“I tell people that I will recommend for Oyo state people, but the decision will rest with the people of Oyo state.
“But if you make a mistake and bring someone who will not do good work, it is a one-day event, but the impact will last four years,” he said, stressing the importance of making the right choice.
Makinde also addressed speculations that he may support former Commissioner for Finance, Bimbo Adekanbi, as his preferred successor.
He said his support would go to any candidate from Oyo State who is loyal and has the competence to deliver effective governance.
“People asked if I have mentored anyone in seven years who can take over without APC influence. I ask them: Morohunkola Thomas or Bimbo Adekanbi, are they not from Oyo State? If you are from Oyo State, loyal, and capable, we will support you,” he said.
He added that his administration is focused on competence rather than political affiliation, stressing that only capable leadership can move Oyo State forward.
