Published

on

The Nigeria Police Force has directed Point of Sale (POS) operators nationwide to stay at least 200 metres away from all police stations and formations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the directive was contained in an internal wireless message issued by the Inspector-General of Police and obtained by Sahara Reporters on Tuesday.

According to the message, the decision followed rising concerns over alleged extortion and corrupt practices involving some POS operators and police personnel.

The Force said the trend was undermining ongoing police reform efforts aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the institution.

The wireless message noted with concern what it described as the increasing presence of POS operators around police formations and the associated allegations of misconduct.

It stated that numerous complaints had linked some operators to corrupt dealings and extortion activities in collaboration with certain police officers.

Consequently, the Inspector-General ordered that no POS operator should be allowed to operate within a 200-metre radius of any police formation across the country.

The directive further warned that Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and heads of formations would be held responsible for any breach of the order within their jurisdictions.

It instructed senior officers to ensure strict compliance and monitor enforcement of the new rule.

Reports indicate that the move is connected to longstanding allegations that some officers allegedly use nearby POS vendors to facilitate extortion and illegal transactions involving civilians at checkpoints and police facilities.

Reasons for the Extension

Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, stated that this decision followed a comprehensive review and feedback from various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and INEC state offices. The extension, for a process that originally commenced on August 18, 2025, aims to provide eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered another opportunity to participate in future electoral activities. INEC emphasized that this move reflects its dedication to ensuring every eligible citizen has a fair chance to be included in the Register of Voters.

New Online Self-Service Option

In addition to the deadline extension, INEC introduced a self-service online registration portal for first-time voters, effective Wednesday, July 8, 2026. Key features of this technology include:

  • Convenience: Eligible citizens can initiate and complete the entire registration process—including biometric capture—from their personal devices, eliminating the need to visit an INEC office physically.

  • Integrity: The system incorporates identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to maintain the accuracy and credibility of the National Register of Voters.

  • Guidance: A step-by-step guide will be available on the dedicated CVR portal to assist users.

INEC is encouraging all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to utilize this extended timeframe and the new technological platform. The commission reiterated its commitment to making the voter registration process more inclusive, accessible, and credible through the use of technology.

The Governor made this statement during a courtesy visit from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, at the Government House in Osogbo. During the meeting, Governor Adeleke addressed claims raised by the IGP—based on information from the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan—that certain criminal suspects were allegedly seeking refuge within the Government House.

In response, Governor Adeleke:

  • Denied any involvement in protecting criminal suspects.

  • Challenged security agencies to arrest any individual found to be culpable, regardless of their status or relationship to the governor.

  • Publicly stated to the IGP, “If it is my son who committed a crime, arrest him, let him learn his lesson.”

Critique of Police Conduct

While pledging his support for law enforcement, Governor Adeleke accused certain police officers of “playing games” with their duties. He highlighted a specific case involving the killing of a 14-year-old boy in Ilobu, claiming that a police officer who successfully arrested a suspect in the case was subsequently transferred.

Call for Professionalism

Governor Adeleke praised IGP Disu’s public commitment to curbing indiscipline within the Nigeria Police Force. He urged police officers in Osun State to uphold professionalism, fairness, and impartiality. The Governor concluded by affirming that his administration is prepared to cooperate with the police, provided that officers perform their duties correctly and ethically.
