“Without Zoning, You’d Never Be VP” — Okechukwu Fires Back At Atiku.

Published

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over remarks reportedly suggesting that zoning is “self-defeating.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Okechukwu, who is also a former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), said in a statement on Tuesday that Atiku’s position contradicts his own political history, arguing that the former vice president was among those who benefited significantly from Nigeria’s zoning arrangement.

According to him, Atiku’s comments amount to self-denial, considering the role zoning has played in shaping political inclusion, national balance, and fairness.

He questioned how Atiku could now downplay the importance of zoning after benefiting from it.

“How can one of the foremost beneficiaries of the zoning convention suddenly deny its profound significance in promoting national cohesion, inclusion, equity, peace, and justice?” Okechukwu said.

He added that without the zoning framework, Atiku may not have risen to the position of vice president, stressing that political conventions, even when not legally binding, often carry strong moral and stabilising influence.

“If there was no zoning arrangement, could Atiku have become Vice President?” he asked.

Okechukwu also referenced Atiku’s political moves during the 2014 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primaries, recalling that Atiku left the PDP for the APC after former President Goodluck Jonathan emerged as the party’s candidate.

Responding to Atiku’s reported question about how a Southern opposition candidate could realistically defeat a sitting Southern president, Okechukwu described the statement as an example of identity politics, arguing that zoning was specifically designed to reduce such divisions.

He said such rhetoric was disappointing and below what should be expected from a statesman.

Okechukwu further rejected Atiku’s argument that by 2027 the South would have held presidential power for about 18 years in the Fourth Republic, compared to roughly 10 years for the North.

He described that position as selective and historically incomplete, arguing that Northern Nigeria had led the country for over four decades since independence in 1960.

According to him, discussions about equity and justice should not be based on selective political calculations or incomplete historical comparisons.
