Nigeria’s ambition to assemble a formidable men’s basketball team for the 2028 Olympic Games is gaining momentum, with four NBA players reportedly showing interest in representing D’Tigers following the appointment of David Fizdale as head coach.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Fizdale, a former head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, previously served as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns from 2023 to 2025 before taking over Nigeria’s national team.

Basketball journalist and scout Coach Hova disclosed that Indiana Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith has already committed to representing Nigeria ahead of the next international basketball window.

“Sources close to me have confirmed that Aaron Nesmith has committed to representing the D’Tigers in the upcoming international basketball window,” Hova was quoted as saying.

Nesmith was selected 14th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2020 NBA Draft before joining the Indiana Pacers in 2022.

Coach Hova also revealed that Memphis Grizzlies star Desmond Bane has begun the process of switching his international allegiance to Nigeria as part of preparations for the 2028 Olympics.

“Desmond Bane is committed and already processing his switch to represent D’Tigers ahead of the 2028 Olympics,” he said.

According to Hova, Bane has also been actively encouraging other NBA players of Nigerian descent, including Nesmith, to join the project.

Earlier in January 2026, Bane told the BBC that he hoped to help unite Nigerian-eligible players for a strong Olympic campaign.

“We just need to get all the Nigerians together for the Olympics coming up in the next couple years and make something happen,” Bane said.

He added that conversations had already started with players such as Aaron Nesmith, Gabe Vincent, and others.

Meanwhile, journalist Kehinde Bamidele reported that Atlanta Hawks centre Onyeka Okongwu remains interested in playing for Nigeria under Fizdale.

“Okongwu remains interested in representing D’Tigers of Nigeria under new head coach David Fizdale,” Bamidele stated.

Okongwu previously missed out on a national team call-up due to short notice, but discussions are said to be ongoing ahead of the July international window.

Bamidele also noted that Ayo Dosunmu has not yet made a final decision on representing Nigeria, although securing his commitment is considered a key priority for Fizdale and his coaching staff.

“Ayo Dosunmu is yet to commit to D’Tigers of Nigeria. Fizdale understands that one of his early priorities will be convincing the guard to represent Nigeria,” he said.

Dosunmu previously represented the United States at youth level, winning gold at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championship, meaning any nationality switch may require official clearance.
