Panic Averted: NCDC Declares No Hantavirus Case In Nigeria.

Published

on

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has stepped up surveillance nationwide following reports of a Hantavirus cluster connected to an international cruise ship involving multiple countries.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the Director-General of the agency, Dr Jide Idris, stated in a public health advisory that no case of Hantavirus has been confirmed in Nigeria. He added that while the risk of local transmission remains low, the agency is maintaining heightened alertness due to ongoing global developments.

He explained that the situation involves a small number of confirmed and suspected infections linked to the cruise ship, with health authorities in affected countries currently carrying out investigations and contact tracing.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodents, and humans can become infected through contact with contaminated rodents, their urine, droppings, saliva, or dust particles from infested environments.

Health officials noted that early symptoms may include fever and gastrointestinal issues, while severe cases can progress to respiratory complications. Although the disease is potentially serious, it remains relatively rare.

The current outbreak cluster has been associated with a strain known as the Andes virus, which in rare instances has shown limited human-to-human transmission, typically through very close contact.

Dr Idris reiterated that Nigeria has not recorded any case of the virus and assured that the NCDC will continue close monitoring while strengthening surveillance systems to quickly detect any possible imported case.

As part of preventive measures, the agency has intensified monitoring efforts to reduce the risk of entry and spread within the country.

Nigerians have also been advised to remain cautious and observe basic hygiene practices that limit exposure to rodents. These include maintaining clean environments, proper food storage, safe waste disposal, avoiding contact with rodents or their droppings, and regular handwashing and sanitation in potentially contaminated areas.

Citing personal experiences—such as his own road trip to Oyo and a recent account from the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) regarding travel to Kebbi—Onanuga emphasized that many citizens continue to travel safely across the country. He acknowledged the existence of security breaches but urged the public not to be intimidated, noting that these incidents do not reflect a nationwide crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, has refuted claims that Nigeria is under siege, stating that security reports often fail to distinguish between isolated incidents and the general safety of the nation. Onanuga criticized media reporting for creating a false sense of widespread instability. By highlighting safe, long-distance road trips taken by himself and other officials, he argued that large parts of the country remain secure for travelers. While admitting that security challenges exist, he cautioned Nigerians against being frightened by narratives that suggest the whole country is unsafe.

Option 3: Bulleted Summary

  • Official Stance: The Presidency maintains that Nigeria is not under siege, despite reports of insecurity in specific locations.

  • Media Critique: Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, suggested that media outlets are contributing to public fear by reporting isolated attacks as if they represent a total national collapse.

  • Evidence of Safety: To counter concerns, Onanuga pointed to his own travel between Lagos and Oyo and the experience of the NELFUND Executive Secretary, who drove from Abuja to Kebbi, as evidence that many Nigerians still travel safely by road.

  • Call to Action: While acknowledging that security breaches occur, Onanuga urged citizens not to let these reports create unnecessary alarm, noting that night travel—previously warned against by the police—remains a factor in some incidents.
