reports that the assault took place in Papiri, a rural community previously affected by insecurity, including the abduction of more than 300 students and staff of St Mary’s Catholic School in November 2025.
According to security sources and local authorities, the attackers stormed the police camp in the early hours of Wednesday while many residents were still asleep.
A community leader said the attack began around 4:30 a.m., with heavy gunfire jolting villagers awake.
“It was around 4:30 am. Many were still sleeping, but the loud sounds of gunfire woke everyone up,” he said.
A surviving mobile police officer disclosed that the terrorists arrived in large numbers and surrounded the camp before launching the assault.
He said security personnel engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and reportedly killed about five of the terrorists during the exchange.
“We engaged them and killed about five of them. Unfortunately, we lost two officers, while another officer sustained gunshot injuries to his arm,” the officer said.
Following the attack, additional security personnel were reportedly deployed to the area to reinforce protection.
However, fear has spread across the community, with many residents fleeing Papiri to nearby villages over concerns of another possible attack.
A resident of a neighbouring village, Idris Alhaji, said several displaced families from Papiri have been seeking shelter in surrounding communities since the incident.
The village leader also confirmed relocating his family from Papiri due to safety concerns.
Residents said the latest attack has revived painful memories of past violence in the area, particularly the mass abduction at St Mary’s Catholic School.
Security reports indicate that the Sadiku-led Boko Haram faction has been responsible for repeated attacks around the Kainji Lake National Park region, which spans parts of Niger and Kwara states.
Before relocating to the Kainji axis, the group reportedly operated extensively in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, where it carried out attacks, abducted residents, and recruited locals.
Its operations in Shiroro triggered widespread displacement and humanitarian challenges, forcing many communities to abandon their homes.
Security sources now warn that the faction appears to be replicating the same pattern of violence in the Kainji region.
