“Why Should It Be Wrong When Others Get Land?” Wike Fires Back at Channels TV Over Land Controversy.

Published

on

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has maintained that the federal government did nothing wrong in allocating land to ambassadors appointed by President Bola Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He also defended his criticism of Channels Television over questions raised by journalists regarding the land allocation during his media chat on Wednesday.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday during an inspection of ongoing projects in Abuja, Wike said there was nothing unusual about allocating land to media organisations for business purposes.

According to him, media houses are commercial entities, not charitable organisations, and must generate revenue through adverts, live broadcasts, and other services to sustain their operations and pay staff salaries.

Wike argued that if the government can allocate land in Abuja to Channels Television for business activities, then similar allocations to others should not be considered wrong.

He said, “Media organizations are not set up for charity; they are for business.

“They run adverts and collect money. Apart from advert payments and live coverage, there are commercial news services for which money is paid.

“This is how they fund their operations and pay staff salaries. Why then should we hide this obvious fact?

“So if government allocated land (not sold, because in the FCT government does not sell land) to a media organization to build structures for its business, is the organization not making money from it? Also, if allocation of land to you is right, why should it be wrong when others get it?”

This comes after Channels Television responded on Thursday, challenging Wike over claims that it benefits financially from land allocated to its Abuja headquarters.

In its response, anchor Kayode Okikiolu said the land was allocated to the station in 2007 for commercial use and that all required payments had been made.

He also dismissed claims that the station profits from its monthly interview with the FCT Minister, explaining that significant production resources are deployed for the programme and that airtime is properly accounted for and paid for.

Channels TV maintained that it would continue to ask tough questions and uphold its editorial independence, while also challenging Wike to publish a full list of journalists allegedly allocated land in the FCT.
