Court Set To Hear Suit Seeking Disqualification Of Goodluck Jonathan From 2027 Presidential Race.

A Federal High Court in Abuja is scheduled to hear on Friday a suit seeking to prevent former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The suit was filed by a lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to run for the office of President again.

On April 28, Justice Peter Lifu directed that hearing notices be served on all defendants, who were yet to file their responses in the case.

In his application, Jideobi is also seeking an order restraining Jonathan from offering himself to any political party as a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election. He further wants the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate.

Jonathan is listed as the first defendant in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, while INEC and the Attorney-General of the Federation are joined as second and third defendants.

The plaintiff is asking the court to interpret whether, in line with Sections 1(1), (2), and (3) as well as 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan is still eligible to contest for the presidency under any circumstance.

He argued that Jonathan has already reached the constitutional limit, having completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before serving a full term after winning the 2011 election.

In an affidavit supporting the suit, Emmanuel Agida stated that Jonathan assumed office on May 6, 2010, following Yar’Adua’s death, and later completed a full elected term.

He added that concerns over Jonathan’s alleged interest in the 2027 election prompted the legal action.

The affidavit further stated that allowing Jonathan to contest again would amount to a third presidential oath of office if he were to win.

According to the plaintiff, the case is being pursued in the public interest to uphold constitutional provisions and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic system.

“I Will Prioritise Credible Opposition If Elected President” — Peter Obi Speaks On Governance Vision.

2027 presidential hopeful and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has said that if elected President of Nigeria, he would prioritise the existence of a credible opposition, describing it as a vital component of governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi, who recently moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), made the remark on Thursday during a visit to the University on the Niger, a faith-based institution, where he donated ₦25 million for its development.

Speaking with journalists, Obi said his frequent party changes were not motivated by convenience, but by crises and internal conflicts within political parties, which he claimed often affected him directly.

He explained that he left previous platforms, including the Labour Party, due to unresolved disputes and persistent internal challenges.

“I have never left any party for leaving’s sake. I leave when I see conflict and crisis,” he said, adding that many political parties are driven by the pursuit of power rather than democratic ideals.

According to him, opposition plays a critical role in governance and should be strengthened rather than weakened.

“If I were in government today, my biggest achievement would be to build a strong opposition, work with them, and embrace their constructive input,” Obi stated.

Responding to questions about his continuous philanthropic activities ahead of the 2027 elections, Obi said he would not divert funds into political logistics such as paying election agents.

He said Nigerians themselves must take responsibility for protecting their votes rather than relying on financial incentives.

“I’m spending money on education because I value the future of young people. I will not keep money to pay polling unit agents,” he said.

Addressing students, Obi urged them to take education seriously, stressing that it remains the foundation for success in business, politics, and life.

He advocated for a society where opportunity is not determined by connections, saying, “We want a country where the child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody.”

He also criticised the country’s value system, noting the disparity in earnings between political office holders and academics, describing it as unacceptable and part of what he aims to change.
