Johnson confirmed his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, which was made available to Punch on Thursday.

The letter was addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1, Shitta/Ogunlana Ward, in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State, and stated that his resignation takes immediate effect.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately,” he wrote.

Johnson expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve in several important roles, including National Auditor and National Publicity Secretary.

“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have contributed my quota to our collective vision, particularly during my tenure as the National Auditor and, more recently, as the National Publicity Secretary,” he stated.

He also appreciated members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for their support and collaboration during his time in office.

“My time serving on the National Working Committee has been rewarding. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my colleagues on the NWC for their camaraderie and shared dedication,” he added.

Explaining the reason behind his departure, Johnson said the current political environment demands a broader opposition alliance.

According to him, “This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition. I believe that at this juncture, my political journey must focus on fostering a more unified front to serve the overarching interests of our nation and its citizens.”

Although he did not officially reveal his next political move, sources within the NNPP told Punch that he is expected to align with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other Kwankwasiyya figures in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

A party source said Johnson’s move was widely anticipated due to his longstanding political ties with Kwankwaso.

“He is obviously going to join Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima in the NDC. You know Ladipo has always been a great asset to Kwankwaso in the NNPP, particularly in terms of his wealth of experience as national publicity secretary.

“I heard there is an ongoing arrangement to bring him in to replicate the same publicity structure in the NDC or, at best, allow him to return to his base in Lagos to coordinate the party’s affairs in the South-West,” the source said.

His resignation comes just days after the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja.

“I Will Prioritise Credible Opposition If Elected President” — Peter Obi Speaks On Governance Vision.

2027 presidential hopeful and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has said that if elected President of Nigeria, he would prioritise the existence of a credible opposition, describing it as a vital component of governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi, who recently moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), made the remark on Thursday during a visit to the University on the Niger, a faith-based institution, where he donated ₦25 million for its development.

Speaking with journalists, Obi said his frequent party changes were not motivated by convenience, but by crises and internal conflicts within political parties, which he claimed often affected him directly.

He explained that he left previous platforms, including the Labour Party, due to unresolved disputes and persistent internal challenges.

“I have never left any party for leaving’s sake. I leave when I see conflict and crisis,” he said, adding that many political parties are driven by the pursuit of power rather than democratic ideals.

According to him, opposition plays a critical role in governance and should be strengthened rather than weakened.

“If I were in government today, my biggest achievement would be to build a strong opposition, work with them, and embrace their constructive input,” Obi stated.

Responding to questions about his continuous philanthropic activities ahead of the 2027 elections, Obi said he would not divert funds into political logistics such as paying election agents.

He said Nigerians themselves must take responsibility for protecting their votes rather than relying on financial incentives.

“I’m spending money on education because I value the future of young people. I will not keep money to pay polling unit agents,” he said.

Addressing students, Obi urged them to take education seriously, stressing that it remains the foundation for success in business, politics, and life.

He advocated for a society where opportunity is not determined by connections, saying, “We want a country where the child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody.”

He also criticised the country’s value system, noting the disparity in earnings between political office holders and academics, describing it as unacceptable and part of what he aims to change.
