The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has declared that the Nigerian government will not remain passive in the face of what she described as the systematic harassment and humiliation of Nigerians living in South Africa.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

She made this known during a telephone conversation with South Africa’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ronald Lamola, according to a statement shared on her Facebook page.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu revealed that the Nigerian government has prioritised the evacuation of citizens who wish to return home from South Africa amid rising concerns over xenophobic attacks and anti-foreigner sentiments.

She also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigerian Missions in South Africa to immediately establish a Crisis Notification Unit to support citizens in distress.

According to the statement, she told her South African counterpart that Nigeria could not ignore reports of harassment, humiliation, and alleged extra-judicial killings of its nationals, stressing that evacuation remains a top priority.

She also called on South African authorities to ensure their police and justice systems take reported cases of killings of Nigerians more seriously, insisting that perpetrators must face swift consequences.

While noting that recent protests in Durban were largely peaceful due to heavy security presence, she said Nigerians were still advised to close their businesses and remain indoors as a precaution.

The minister also raised concerns about inflammatory rhetoric from anti-foreigner political groups in South Africa, warning that such actions put both Nigerian and other foreign nationals at risk and could strain bilateral relations.

She added that Nigerians have shown restraint despite the ongoing tensions, even as reports emerged of bullying of Nigerian children and those of mixed Nigerian-South African heritage in schools, who are being told to “return to their country.”

Describing the situation as unacceptable, she warned that such incidents could cause lasting psychological trauma.

In response, Minister Ronald Lamola reportedly acknowledged the concerns and assured that South African authorities are working through education and oversight bodies to discourage such behaviour and protect vulnerable children.
