Why North Will Not Support Obi/Kwankwaso Ticket – Datti.

Former Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed doubts over Peter Obi’s ability to secure broad support from Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He made this known during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he stated that it was unlikely the North would unite behind Obi’s presidential ambition.

Datti clarified that his remarks reflected his personal opinion, stressing that he still enjoys cordial relationships and deep respect for key political stakeholders.

According to him, he had previously advised Obi to begin building strategic alliances well ahead of the next election cycle.

He disclosed that on January 31, 2024, he specifically urged Obi to engage influential northern political figures such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai as part of an early political strategy for 2027.

Datti emphasized that long-term planning is essential in politics, warning that failure to prepare years in advance could cast doubt on a candidate’s seriousness and readiness.

He added that his continued political alignment would depend largely on the presence of a clear and practical long-term plan.

Commenting on Obi’s recent political moves, Datti noted the former Anambra governor’s increasing closeness to Kwankwaso but questioned whether such an alliance would ultimately deliver success, saying only time would determine its effectiveness.

He also faulted Obi’s approach to the Labour Party’s internal crisis, arguing that having emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, Obi should have remained within the party to resolve its challenges rather than distance himself.

Datti said he deliberately avoids naming individuals publicly at this stage but maintained that, in his view, the North is unlikely to fully rally behind Obi.

He recalled advising Obi directly to reach out to northern power brokers, insisting that anyone unable to strategically plan for 2027 as early as 2024 may not be adequately prepared for the political battle ahead.
