The appeal was made during a press briefing on Sunday by the head of the ruling house, Chief Abdul-Lateef Owoyemi, alongside other senior family members.

Owoyemi said the prolonged suspension has heightened anxiety among Ijebu indigenes and key stakeholders, stressing that the process of selecting a new Awujale should continue without further delay.

According to him, the process has remained suspended since January 2026 following directives from the Ogun State Government over allegations of bribery and inducement.

Ruling House Insists Due Process Was Followed

Owoyemi explained that the Fusengbuwa Ruling House had already fulfilled its traditional responsibility by forwarding a list of nominees to the designated kingmakers in accordance with established customs.

He noted that the process was halted before the kingmakers could complete their constitutional role.

The ruling house maintained that investigations by security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), did not establish any wrongdoing against members of the family or the kingmakers.

Owoyemi described the continued suspension as unfair, arguing that it has disrupted a respected traditional institution and subjected family members and kingmakers to unnecessary scrutiny.

Calls for Immediate Resumption

He insisted that the allegations which triggered the suspension remain unproven and should not be used to indefinitely stall the emergence of a new monarch.

Owoyemi said the family remains committed to transparency and due process but urged the state government not to allow unresolved accusations to obstruct tradition.

Confidence in Kingmakers

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House also reaffirmed confidence in the integrity of the kingmakers overseeing the succession process.

According to Owoyemi, the kingmakers were carefully selected during the reign of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, to ensure a peaceful and credible transition.

He added that the late monarch had already laid down structures to guarantee a smooth succession process.

While acknowledging the Ogun State Government’s commitment to transparency, the ruling house appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to allow the kingmakers resume and conclude their duties.

Family leaders at the briefing, including Deputy Chairman Chief Adedokun Ajidagba and Vice Chairman Chief Fassy Yusuf, said the emergence of a new Awujale would restore stability and reinforce unity across Ijebuland.
