The Federal Government has approved the creation of a national aircraft leasing company aimed at helping domestic airlines access modern aircraft under more affordable and competitive terms.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the development after a Federal Executive Council meeting, describing it as a significant intervention in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

In a statement issued on Friday, Keyamo explained that the company will operate as a private-sector-led Special Purpose Vehicle with government support.

He said the initiative is designed to transform how Nigerian airlines acquire and finance aircraft, particularly by addressing long-standing challenges in securing leases from international providers.

According to him, “This initiative is a game-changer for our aviation industry. It eliminates the long-standing challenges Nigerian airlines face in accessing aircraft on competitive terms and positions the country as a hub for aviation financing in Africa.”

The minister noted that the new system will allow airlines to access aircraft through a central platform rather than negotiating individually with foreign leasing companies.

He added that the Federal Government will provide backing through sovereign guarantees, while private investors will handle the day-to-day operations of the company.

Keyamo further explained that the structure is designed to boost investor confidence, especially in areas such as asset protection and financial security.

He stated that government participation will be channelled through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, without direct funding from the treasury.

According to him, “Through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, the government will hold equity and earn revenue without direct financial investment. Our primary obligation is to provide the confidence investors need, especially in ensuring asset security.”

The statement also noted that the leasing firm will not be limited to Nigerian carriers alone, but will extend services to airlines across West Africa and the broader African aviation market.

Keyamo said the model has already attracted interest from both local and international investors and is expected to strengthen airline capacity and improve the aviation value chain.

He added that the project is part of broader efforts to position Nigeria as a leading aviation financing hub in Africa.

The initiative is also expected to ease pressure on domestic airlines, many of which have struggled with high leasing costs, limited access to aircraft, and difficult global financing conditions.
