2027 Politics Heats Up: APC Govs, Lawmakers Hold Crucial Meeting on Return Tickets.

Published

on

As political parties ramp up preparations for the next general elections, stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State have endorsed President Bola Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate, while also backing Governor Abba Yusuf as its governorship candidate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Meanwhile, a Presidential Supervision Team held a meeting with APC governors on Thursday night as part of efforts to ease internal tensions ahead of the 11th National Assembly in the Fourth Republic.

The team also held separate consultations with the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and other principal officers, focusing on lawmakers’ demands for return tickets in the 2027 elections.

Both meetings took place at the Presidential Villa and the Imo State Governor’s Lodge.

Sources familiar with the discussions told The Nation that deliberations centred on requests by federal lawmakers seeking re-election tickets, as well as support for some legislators aspiring to governorship positions.

However, it was gathered that some governors opposed the inclusion of certain returning senators and House of Representatives members.

A consolidated “continuity list” is expected to be presented to President Tinubu to guide the APC’s consensus-building process.

Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State were reportedly absent from the meeting, having opted for a separate engagement with the President in Paris, France, due to disagreements over the proposals.

APC Pushes For Reduced Political Tension

A source at the meeting said the engagement was aimed at reducing friction between National Assembly members and state governors.

According to the source, the Presidential Supervision Team is encouraging governors—who have been tasked by Tinubu to oversee nominations in their states—to accommodate defectors from other political parties joining the APC.

The source explained that the goal is to balance the next National Assembly with both experienced lawmakers and fresh entrants.

“The leadership of the National Assembly wants to avoid a repeat of the 10th Assembly, where most members were first-timers. Such high turnover does not strengthen the legislature,” the source said.

It was also noted that several influential lawmakers who defected to the APC have strong electoral value that should not be ignored, prompting calls for governors to make concessions on some ticket allocations.

The source added that historical tensions between lawmakers and governors—often over succession, party control, and project influence—remain a key concern.

“We want to approach 2027 with minimal tension in the states so that the APC can present a united front against other parties,” the source said.

On the issue of lawmakers seeking governorship tickets and outgoing governors eyeing Senate seats, another source revealed that efforts were made to manage the sensitive political balance.

The source added that in some states, President Tinubu may need to personally intervene to resolve disputes and maintain party unity, warning that unresolved cases could lead to direct primaries.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for expressing dissatisfaction that President Bola Tinubu did not reach out to him personally following the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
