The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has announced the dismissal of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He also confirmed that the dismissed officers will face prosecution following their removal from service.

Disu made the disclosure on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He condemned the April 26 incident, which led to Ogidi’s death, describing it as “criminal and unprofessional,” and stressing that such conduct is unacceptable within the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, ASP Usman, identified as the principal suspect, along with other officers involved, were transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja to face disciplinary action.

He explained that the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) immediately took up the matter, while three inspectors were also subjected to an Orderly Room Trial.

Investigations, he said, revealed that ASP Usman breached Force Order 247, which governs the use of firearms, as well as established operational procedures.

Following the findings, the police leadership recommended the dismissal of all officers implicated in the incident and directed that they be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution for unlawful homicide after their exit from service. The recommendations have since been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.

The IGP distanced the Police Force from the actions of the officers, stating that they acted outside official regulations and the core values of the institution. He firmly stated, “No uniform is a license to kill.”

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice would be served transparently. Disu also urged residents of Delta State and Nigerians at large to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, adding that “the era of impunity is over.”

The incident had earlier gone viral after a video surfaced showing Ogidi with his hands tied behind his back before he was shot at close range by a police officer, sparking widespread public outrage.

The officer later identified as ASP Nuhu was arrested and moved to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.

In response to these allegations, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called for Obi to pay a ₦25,000 fine and publicly apologize to airport staff, stating that an internal investigation confirmed the vehicle was improperly parked. Keyamo provided details from CCTV footage of the July 4, 2026, incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, noting the following:

  • Obi arrived at the domestic terminal at approximately 8:28 p.m. in a vehicle driven by a police officer.

  • After dropping off the passengers, the driver parked the vehicle in a restricted drop-off zone and left it unattended to enter the terminal, which violates airport regulations.
