Speaking through the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, during the flag-off of the 2026 World and African Immunization Week at the Primary Health Care Centre along Peter Sarki Road, Tunga, the governor said the programme should be seen as a call to urgent action rather than a ceremonial event.

He stressed that “behind every vaccination is a life protected and a future secured,” aligning the message with this year’s theme, “For Every Generation, Vaccines Work.”

Governor Bago highlighted the global impact of vaccines, noting that they have saved millions of lives, eliminated smallpox, and pushed polio close to eradication. He added that these achievements reflect real human outcomes, including saved lives, protected families, and healthier communities.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, he disclosed that all 25 local government areas in the state have been fully mobilised for the exercise, adding that vaccines remain free, safe, and effective. He urged parents and caregivers to ensure that no child is left out of routine immunisation.

The Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government and former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mustapha Jibril, called on community leaders to actively tackle misinformation and promote vaccine acceptance at the grassroots level.

He noted that achieving the state’s goal of vaccinating over 80 percent of children would require sustained collaboration between the Ministry of Health, local government councils, and development partners, especially in reaching remote communities.

Jibril also dismissed misconceptions surrounding vaccines and pledged that all local government chairmen would align with the state’s health priorities to ensure full immunisation coverage.

Representing UNICEF, Social and Behaviour Change Team Lead Grace Odeyemi reiterated that vaccines remain one of the most effective tools for preventing childhood diseases, reaffirming the organisation’s support for Niger State in reaching zero-dose children.

Community voices also reflected growing awareness. An expectant mother, Aisha Isa, encouraged women to prioritise vaccination and antenatal care, saying it has provided her with guidance and reassurance during pregnancy.

Similarly, nursing mother Katumi Aliyu shared her positive experience with regular clinic visits, noting that consistent medical care has strengthened her confidence in the healthcare system.
