The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has stated that the disciplinary action taken against ASP Nuhu Usman, who shot and killed a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, is intended to serve as a strong warning to other officers in the Force.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The IGP made this known while addressing journalists on Tuesday following the incident that led to the death of a young man, Mene Ogidi, in what has been described as an unlawful killing.

Naija News reports that ASP Nuhu Usman was accused of acting outside the scope of his duty after allegedly killing the victim in an extra-judicial manner, an act the police leadership has condemned in strong terms.

“The action was criminal, unprofessional, and has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP said.

He explained that immediately after receiving the report, he ordered the transfer of all officers involved from the Delta State Command to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.

According to him, the officers were subjected to internal disciplinary processes without delay, including appearances before the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and the Orderly Room Tribunal.

The IGP revealed that investigations confirmed ASP Nuhu Usman violated Force Order 247, which regulates the use of firearms, as well as established operational procedures.

He stressed that no level of suspicion justifies the killing of a citizen, adding that the primary duty of the police remains the protection of life, not its destruction.

Following the investigations, the disciplinary panels recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers involved, as well as their prosecution for unlawful homicide once removed from service.

The IGP said the recommendations have already been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.

He further reiterated that the conduct of the officers does not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that the institution maintains zero tolerance for abuse of power.

“The Nigeria Police Force is guided by the rule of law. No uniform gives anyone the right to take a life unlawfully,” he said.

Disu extended condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful loss, while assuring that justice would be fully pursued.

He also appealed to residents of Delta State and Nigerians in general to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that the era of impunity within the Force is over.
