He made this known in an interview with News Central, where he reflected on the challenging period he endured under the military regime of Sani Abacha, during which he was detained.

Obasanjo recalled that several individuals stood by him during that difficult time and contributed to his safety, including the current police chief, whom he credited for playing a part in keeping him alive while he was under restriction.

He described the experience as one of the most difficult moments of his life, noting that he has not forgotten those who supported him. According to him, it is important to acknowledge and appreciate those who offer help in times of hardship.

“I must specially acknowledge the current IGP because perhaps the reason I am alive today is that he was among those who ensured my safety while I was under house arrest,” he said.

Beyond expressing gratitude, the former president also addressed Nigeria’s security challenges, advocating for the establishment of state police as a solution to rising insecurity.

He explained that decentralised policing would enable officers to better understand their local environments and respond more effectively to threats, adding that it could help prevent crimes before they escalate.

Obasanjo stressed the need for practical measures to tackle insecurity, insisting that the creation of state police remains a viable option for strengthening law enforcement across the country.

Legal Battle Begins As Detained Colonel Challenges FG In Court Over Coup Plot Claim.

A Nigerian Army officer, Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging his continued detention since September 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He is asking the court to order his release and also seeking ₦500 million in damages for alleged violations of his fundamental rights.

The suit, filed under the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules of 2009, names the Attorney General of the Federation, the Chief of Army Staff, the Nigerian Army, and the Chief of Defence Intelligence as respondents. It questions why he has allegedly been held for several months without being charged in court.

Through his lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Ma’aji argued that his prolonged detention without trial violates his constitutional rights to liberty and human dignity.

Court filings indicate that he was arrested around September 30, 2025, alongside others over allegations of involvement in a coup plot. Since then, he has reportedly remained in military custody in Abuja.

He further alleged that he has been denied access to his family, legal representatives, and adequate medical care during his detention.

The officer maintained that despite claims that investigations have been concluded, authorities have failed to formally charge him within the time required by law. He based his arguments on provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Among his requests, he is seeking a declaration that his detention is unlawful, an order for his immediate release, or alternatively, a directive compelling authorities to arraign him within seven days.

He is also demanding ₦500 million in compensation for the period he has allegedly spent in custody without trial.

An affidavit submitted by a litigation officer in his legal team stated that he has been completely cut off from communication since his arrest and has not been formally charged.

The court is yet to assign a date for the hearing of the case.
