The victims, Master Warrant Officer (retd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were reportedly abducted and murdered by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of the state.

The couple had embarked on the journey in April 2022 to Gloria’s hometown ahead of their wedding ceremony.

Colleagues described their relationship as one founded on mutual respect and shared commitment, noting that they sustained their bond despite being deployed to different locations across the country.

However, their trip ended tragically after they were kidnapped and later killed by armed assailants.

According to military sources, troops of the 82 Division, working with other security agencies, launched a targeted operation on April 24, 2026, following fresh intelligence.

During the mission, the soldiers reportedly came under heavy attack but successfully repelled the assailants after an intense exchange of gunfire.

The troops continued the operation and discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.

The bodies have since been recovered and will undergo forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities before burial.

Efforts are ongoing to reach the families of the deceased to aid proper identification.

The Nigerian Army has pledged to accord the fallen personnel a dignified burial with full military honours in recognition of their service and sacrifice.

The incident occurred amid ongoing security challenges in parts of the South-East, where attacks by armed groups have impacted both civilians and security operatives.
