The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (Nigerians in Diaspora Commission) has advised Nigerians living in South Africa to temporarily shut down their businesses and avoid any form of confrontation following a renewed wave of xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The advisory comes amid rising anti-foreigner demonstrations in which protesters have reportedly targeted foreign-owned shops and called for the removal of non-nationals.

In a statement issued on Friday, the commission noted that protests in cities including East London, Cape Town, Durban, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal have turned violent, resulting in looting, destruction of property, and injuries.

Tensions escalated after a viral video surfaced showing a Nigerian trader being confronted by a group of South African men who ordered him to pack up his goods and leave the country.

The situation has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians and other foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, many of whom rely on small businesses for their livelihoods.

According to NiDCOM, intelligence from the Nigerian consulate suggests that further protests are expected in Gauteng province between April 27 and 29.

The commission explained that the demonstrations are aimed at pressuring the South African government over the presence of foreign nationals.

It advised Nigerians to avoid protest areas, stay away from crowded locations, and monitor local media for real-time updates.

Business owners were also urged to close shops on April 27, South Africa’s Freedom Day, and possibly remain closed on April 28 and 29, as foreign-owned businesses are often targeted during periods of unrest.

NiDCOM stated that it is working closely with the Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg, led by Ninikanwa O. Okey-Uche, to ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens.

The commission also said that Bianca Onoh is engaging South African authorities on the matter, while reassuring Nigerians that diplomatic missions remain active and focused on safeguarding lives as the situation develops.
