Certificate Controversy: Ex-Minister Nnaji Moves To Settle UNN Dispute Out Of Court.

Published

Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has begun moves to resolve out of court a legal case he filed against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and other respondents over allegations surrounding his academic records.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, Nnaji filed the suit in October 2025 following an investigation that questioned the authenticity of his degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates. He later resigned from his ministerial position three days after the report became public, which detailed how the documents were used during his appointment process.

During Monday’s court sitting, his lawyer, Ope Muritala, informed the court of a fresh development, noting that parties were exploring the possibility of an out-of-court settlement and requested an adjournment to allow discussions to continue.

Counsel representing the Minister of Education and the National Universities Commission stated they were not fully aware of the latest development but did not oppose the request for adjournment. Lawyers for the University of Nigeria, Nsukka also confirmed that settlement talks were ongoing, though they urged the court to still consider their pending application should negotiations fail.

However, the presiding judge, Hauwa Yilwa, declined to rule on the request at that stage, explaining that it would only be considered if the settlement efforts break down. The matter was subsequently adjourned to July 8.

The case has so far been delayed by procedural issues, including challenges related to service of court documents and preliminary objections raised by the defendants, who had earlier asked for the suit to be dismissed on grounds of jurisdictional concerns.

Meanwhile, a federal government investigative panel set up by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, reportedly concluded that Nnaji’s degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was forged. The panel stated that although he gained admission in the 1981/82 academic session, there was no record of his graduation in 1985, and he was not listed among graduating students.

The report further noted that he allegedly failed a key course and could not be verified as having retaken or passed it. Investigators also questioned how a certificate dated July 1985, which he submitted for ministerial appointment, came into his possession.

The findings have intensified public calls for further legal action, even as the court case over his academic records remains ongoing.

Ufochukwu also noted that her agenda extends beyond trade, including the promotion of Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investment opportunities, as well as supporting training programmes in cybersecurity and information technology.

She assured stakeholders of her commitment to fully delivering on her responsibilities, adding that sustained communication and cooperation would be important in achieving set goals.

Participants at the forum highlighted the need for Nigeria to address structural barriers affecting business growth, while pointing to Israel’s innovation-driven economy as a model worth studying.

One of the attendees, Pastor Henry Opara, called for formal bilateral agreements, stressing that most current business interactions between both countries are informal and based on personal relationships rather than structured government frameworks.
