The arrests were part of a series of intelligence-led operations carried out across multiple states as the agency intensified its fight against illicit drug networks.

In Abia State, operatives arrested 93-year-old Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu at his residence in Umuagbaigba, Amavo Nkwogu village, Osisioma Local Government Area, on April 7.

A search of his home reportedly led to the recovery of 7.7 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis.

The suspect allegedly told investigators that he had worked various jobs, including truck pushing and later painting and tiling, before venturing into the drug trade about a year ago. He also admitted to having smoked cannabis since 1959.

In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives arrested a 41-year-old Ivorian national, Gohouri Michael, at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Milan via Addis Ababa.

He was found with 82 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.49kg concealed in his body.

Investigations revealed he had travelled from Milan to Lagos earlier in the year and moved between Lagos and Enugu before proceeding to Kano, where he allegedly ingested the drugs in a hotel.

A follow-up operation led to the arrest of a suspected accomplice, a 69-year-old medical doctor, Dr Chudi Daniel Ofomata, in Magboro, Ogun State. Authorities said promazepam and promethazine injections were recovered from him.

The NDLEA also confirmed multiple arrests and drug seizures across other states, including Ogun, Imo, Niger, Borno, Lagos and Edo.

In Ogun State, three suspects were arrested with 34kg of skunk, while in Imo State, a female suspect was caught with 56.2kg of cannabis.

In Niger State, a couple was arrested after 118kg of cannabis was found in their kitchen, while in Borno State, a trailer carrying spare parts was intercepted with large quantities of codeine syrup, Rohypnol tablets and pentazocine injections.

In Lagos, operatives seized cannabis and codeine-based syrup in separate interceptions, while in Edo State, over 7,200kg of processed cannabis hidden in trucks was recovered, with five suspects arrested.

The agency said its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign is also ongoing nationwide, targeting schools, communities and transport hubs with sensitisation programmes.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operations and urged sustained efforts to curb both drug supply and demand through enforcement and public awareness.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.

The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.

The award-winning actress made this revelation during an interview with CNN journalist Larry Madowo, where she spoke candidly about her emotional struggles and the pressures that come with being a public figure.

Akindele disclosed that when things become overwhelming, she sometimes locks herself in her room to cry and release her emotions. However, she said she eventually gathers the strength to pick herself up and face life’s challenges.

The filmmaker also discussed the pressure of living in the public eye, particularly the scrutiny surrounding her marriages and relationship breakups.

She admitted that there are moments when she questions her decisions and worries about how people might judge her choices.

“I cry. I lock myself in the room, cry, break down, hit the bed. But I just pick up myself and come back to life. Sometimes I tell myself, ah, you’ve made a mistake again. How are people going to judge you?

“Do you care about that? Why don’t you just brace up, face it, face the challenges, move on in life? I’ve noticed over the years that it’s not all about the work. You need to take care of yourself. You need to love yourself. You need to have time for your family, your loved ones, because as the work would go, the family would be there,” she said.

Akindele further emphasised the importance of self-care, self-love and making time for family, noting that professional success should not come at the expense of personal well-being and relationships.
