Court Sentences Alleged Boko Haram Victim After 10 Years In Detention.

Published

Justice Peter Odo Lifu of the Abuja Federal High Court has sentenced Ali Kolo, a Boko Haram attack survivor, to nine years in prison after more than a decade in detention.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Kolo, who was shot in the right leg by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State, was found guilty of failing to report the group’s activities to security agencies. He faced a four-count charge but pleaded guilty to one count related to concealing information about the terrorists’ operations.

During the trial, Federal Government lawyer David Kaswe explained that in 2017, Kolo did not inform the military or any security agency about Boko Haram activities, as required under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2013. Kaswe presented Kolo’s extra-judicial statement admitting the failure and an investigation report implicating him. Justice Lifu admitted these exhibits after no objection from Kolo’s lawyer, Mrs. A.O. Usman.

The prosecution requested a 10-year jail term, citing the guilty plea and supporting evidence. Kolo, however, told the court that he was shot with an AK-47 while on his way to report Boko Haram to the military and was hospitalized, which prevented him from completing the report.

Justice Lifu acknowledged that Kolo failed to report the terror activities but recognized it was due to circumstances beyond his control. He sentenced Kolo to nine years, backdated to 2017, noting that he had already served over 10 years in detention. The judge ordered his immediate release to receive treatment for his gunshot injury, emphasizing that Kolo was convicted only for concealment of information, not for Boko Haram membership or weapons training.

In a separate case, Ibrahim Buba, a bricklayer from Borno State also known as Baba Gana, was sentenced to 10 years for failing to relay Boko Haram information to the military. Buba admitted knowing some terrorists and fleeing from Borno to Mubi in Adamawa State and then Onitsha in Anambra State, where he was arrested in 2023. Justice Lifu reduced his sentence from the 20 years requested by the prosecution, backdating it to his arrest on March 24, 2023.

Both rulings highlight the court’s distinction between survivors of Boko Haram attacks and individuals actively aiding or concealing terrorist operations.

Fayose insisted that it is time for the South to complete its political cycle, adding that Atiku’s repeated bids for the presidency were unfair and out of step with current realities.
