“Southwest Pensioners Threaten Lawsuit Over Unpaid Gratuities!.
Pensioners in the Southwest region have threatened to take legal action against some state governors over unpaid gratuities and other benefits, some of which have been outstanding since 2011.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Olusegun Abatan, Southwest PRO of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), made the disclosure on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the union’s quarterly meeting held in Abeokuta by the Ogun State branch.
Abatan said that despite repeated appeals to the governors, most pensioners have yet to receive their dues. He, however, commended Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo State for their support, noting that the union plans to honour them with special celebrations at the end of the year.
“The money due since 2011, even if it was just ₦10,000 then, is now far less meaningful in 2026. It is unfortunate that some governors act as if nothing is wrong,” Abatan said.
He added, “For governors who are taking care of pensioners, we will celebrate them—primarily Engr. Seyi Makinde and Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa. But for those neglecting their duties, we have decided to take legal action. We have pleaded as senior citizens, but they seem indifferent to our plight. We will soon go to court to fight for our rights.”
The retirees also criticised the current ₦25,000 minimum pension, pointing out that even the ₦70,000 minimum wage is insufficient given Nigeria’s economic realities. They urged labour unions to push the government for better pension and wage packages.
Additionally, the union accused governors of delaying the implementation of the 2019 consequential adjustment and other federally mandated pension increases dating back to 2010, calling it unfair treatment of pensioners.
