“Wike Should Apologize For Threatening To Shoot Journalist – Atiku’s Media Team”.
The Atiku Media Office has demanded that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, issue a public apology for his “threat” against Channels Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the ex-Vice President’s media team said Wike’s remarks signal growing intolerance for dissent under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The statement described the minister’s comment as reckless and unacceptable, emphasizing that such rhetoric from a government official threatens press freedom and democratic principles.
“For a serving minister to declare on live television that he wished to shoot a journalist over a professional opinion is not only reckless—it is a chilling display of the government’s descent into intolerance, lawlessness, and abuse of power,” the statement said.
It stressed that the comment should not be dismissed as a joke, noting that it represents a direct and alarming threat against a journalist performing his duties.
The media team added that when public officials resort to violent language against journalists, it sends a dangerous message about the state of democracy in Nigeria.
The statement further argued that this incident reflects a pattern under the Tinubu administration, where criticism is often met with hostility and intimidation.
“What offense did Mr. Okinbaloye commit? He simply warned against the creeping danger of a one-party state. Yet, a federal minister responded not with reason, but with a threat of violence,” it said.
The Atiku Media Office warned that normalizing threats against journalists could weaken democratic institutions and embolden attacks on press freedom.
It called on Wike to issue an immediate, unconditional apology to Okinbaloye and the wider Nigerian media community. The office also urged the Tinubu administration to publicly repudiate the minister’s remarks and guarantee the safety of journalists nationwide.
“Failure to act will confirm the fears of many Nigerians—that this government is increasingly comfortable with intimidation and repression,” the statement concluded.
