The accolades came during the inauguration of the airport, the state-owned Gateway Airline, and other landmark projects, including major road and housing developments across the state.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu lauded Governor Abiodun’s achievements, noting that his leadership had justified the trust placed in him by both the federal government and the people of Ogun State.
“I sincerely appreciate this opportunity to celebrate the remarkable vision of a governor and his predecessors. Today, we commission the economic nerve center of our corridor,” Tinubu said. “In less than seven years, Dapo Abiodun has demonstrated commitment, vision, and patriotism to grow Nigeria. I congratulate the people of this great state for supporting a government delivering measurable progress.”
Tinubu also emphasized that his administration’s investments aim to benefit the people and remarked that Nigeria is regaining respect and recognition on the global stage. He noted that the Gateway Airport, tied to energy and gas investments, reflects Abiodun’s commitment to inclusive development. He further praised the governor’s agricultural initiatives and the rollout of 1,000 electric bikes, describing them as smart solutions to modern transportation challenges.
Former President Obasanjo described the inauguration as a historic moment for Ogun State and commended Abiodun for constructing the airport, highlighting the reduced travel time it provides compared to Lagos. Obasanjo also reflected on his involvement in creating Ogun State 50 years ago, noting the remarkable transformation the state has achieved under Abiodun’s leadership.
Senate President Akpabio praised President Tinubu’s reforms, which he said had freed states from salary arrears, and also applauded Abiodun’s judicious use of federal allocations and the Gateway Airport project.
Governor Abiodun, visibly elated by the president’s presence, described the event as symbolic and expressed gratitude for the federal government’s support, noting that Tinubu’s economic reforms had positioned Nigeria as a competitive investment destination. He highlighted efforts to close Ogun’s infrastructure gap to maximize the state’s proximity to Lagos, enhance trade mobility, and boost economic growth.
Abiodun outlined his administration’s key achievements over the past seven years, including:
- Aviation & Transportation: Launch of Gateway Airline, construction of 1,600 km of roads including the Epe-Ijebu Ode, Sango-Abeokuta Expressway, Ilishan-Iperu Road, and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Expressway.
- Housing: Development of Muhammadu Buhari Estate with 100 housing units, plus over 7,000 affordable homes.
- Healthcare: Completion of 140 primary health centers and the 200-bed Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence.
- Energy: First phase of the 34.1 MW Onijanganjangan Independent Power Project to support industrial growth.
- Agriculture: Promotion of mechanized farming with modern tractors to enhance food security.
- Security & Mobility: Deployment of 100 pickup vehicles for law enforcement and introduction of electric mobility solutions to reduce reliance on fuel.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Governors of Zamfara, Bayelsa, Taraba, Ekiti, Ondo, Niger, and Lagos States; deputy governors of Oyo and Lagos; Senators Gbenga Daniel, Ibikunle Amosun, and Olusegun Osoba; as well as prominent business leaders such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, and executives from ANN Plc and BUA Group. Also present were CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, Minister of Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu, and Zenith Bank CEO.
The inauguration of Gateway Airport and the launch of Gateway Airline symbolize Ogun State’s rapid infrastructural growth and the government’s commitment to positioning the state as a hub for investment, aviation, and economic development.
