“‘I Meant No Harm’ – Wike Backtracks On ‘Threat’ To TV Host”.

on

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has clarified that his controversial remark during a media chat on Channels Television was figurative and not intended as a threat.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The clarification was made in a statement issued on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

Olayinka explained that the minister’s comment during the interview with Channels Television anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, had been widely misunderstood. He stressed that Wike had no intention of harming the journalist, noting that the remark was simply an expression of frustration.

“The minister never meant that he would shoot Seun Okinbaloye. They have even spoken on the phone, and Okinbaloye understands what was meant,” the statement said.

According to Olayinka, Wike’s reaction stemmed from disappointment, as he holds the journalist in high regard but felt his comments during the interview reflected a political stance rather than neutrality.

He added that the statement was made in a hyperbolic manner, using exaggeration to emphasize a point, and was not meant to be taken literally.

Olayinka further noted that the minister clarified his position during the live broadcast, and members of the interview panel, including Channels Television’s Abuja Bureau Chief, Chamberlain Uzor, understood the context.

He warned against attempts to misrepresent the comment for political purposes, describing such actions as deliberate distortions of facts.

“After the minister clearly explained that he did not mean he would actually carry a gun and shoot the presenter, any attempt to twist the statement is a deliberate effort to mislead the public,” he said.

The aide urged Nigerians to disregard efforts to use the remark for propaganda or blackmail, insisting that it had been taken out of context.

While security sources indicate that rescue efforts are continuing, they have not provided a specific timeline.

A bandit kingpin, Kachalla Muhammad, stated in an audio message that he had previously intended to release the widow but reversed his decision due to the heavy deployment of security personnel in the area. Furthermore, the bandit leader expressed frustration over the arrest of individuals linked to his group, warning that these actions have hindered potential dialogue and reiterated his demands for the release of the three detainees and the return of seized cattle.
