“NLS Warns CJN: Refer NBA President To LPPC Or Face Court Action Over Erring Lawyers”.

Published

on

The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has threatened legal action if the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, fails to refer the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, SAN, to the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The NLS, which represents non-litigation lawyers, is also calling on the CJN, who heads the LPPC, to issue a practice direction empowering judges to sanction lawyers who engage in professional misconduct in court.

The dispute arose after Osigwe publicly criticized judges for disciplining lawyers who allegedly acted unprofessionally. In one notable case, Justice Mohammed Umar of the Abuja Federal High Court ordered Marshall Abubakar, lead counsel for politician and publisher Omoyele Sowore, to kneel in open court for raising his voice during proceedings. Osigwe condemned the ruling, insisting judges have no right to make such demands of lawyers.

In response, the NLS argued that lawyers who display unprofessional conduct should face corrective measures, including anger management therapy, and warned that it would go to court if the CJN fails to act.

In a letter to the CJN, signed by NLS Executive Director Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, the Society emphasized the urgent need to address professional misconduct in the legal profession. The letter cited previous findings, including:

  • A March 2025 speech by the CJN noting that rising misconduct among litigation lawyers threatens the “temple of justice,” based on evidence from the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).
  • A March 28, 2026 report by Femi Falana, SAN, detailing how some lawyers undermine the judiciary through unprofessional behavior.

The NLS requested that Osigwe be referred to the LPPC for his public reprimand of a Federal High Court judge, stressing that such action would serve as a deterrent to other lawyers.

The Society further urged the CJN and other court heads to enact practice directions or subsidiary legislation empowering judges to impose sanctions on lawyers, noting that current contempt laws are insufficient to curb misconduct in Nigerian courts.

Finally, the NLS gave a deadline of April 1, 2026, warning that it would file a lawsuit against both the CJN and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to compel action and protect the integrity and reputation of the “temple of justice.” The Society expressed hope that litigation would not be necessary if both institutions publicly confirm they have taken the required steps.

WAR ON TAX: NLC And TUC Declare Total War Against Taxing Workers’ Minimum Wage!.

Published

on

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced their intention to restart negotiations with the Federal Government for a new national minimum wage, citing that current pay levels are unsustainable due to the soaring cost of living. In a joint address at the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, the unions emphasized that inflation, currency devaluation, and the rising costs of essentials like food, transport, housing, and healthcare have severely diminished workers’ real incomes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The labor centers are advocating for a “genuine living wage” to replace the current framework, which they argue no longer aligns with Nigeria’s economic climate. The existing ₦70,000 minimum wage, enacted in July 2024, was originally set for a three-year review cycle, though the government shifted this to a two-year window in early 2025, scheduling the next review for 2026. To avoid past delays, the unions plan to formally initiate these discussions before the July 2026 deadline.

Key points from the unions’ position include:

  • Opposition to Wage Taxation: The NLC and TUC have firmly rejected any proposals to tax the minimum wage, warning that such measures would increase poverty and place an unbearable burden on low-income earners.

  • Demand for Relief: Until a new wage is finalized, the unions are calling for immediate relief measures from all levels of government to address the economic strain.

  • Focus on Real Income: Future negotiations must prioritize protecting real purchasing power rather than just nominal increases, as inflation continues to erode wage value.

  • Insecurity Concerns: The unions highlighted that pervasive insecurity—characterized by killings, abductions, and displacement—is severely affecting worker productivity and safety, with millions of citizens already living in multidimensional poverty.

  • Political Engagement: Looking toward the 2027 elections, the unions are drafting a “charter of demands” and stated they will only support political candidates who commit to labor rights, wage reform, and improved public services.

Furthermore, the unions denounced alleged government interference in union leadership and vowed to protect the independence of labor organizations. They maintained that the upcoming negotiations are critical to determining whether Nigerian workers will secure a livable income or continue to face worsening hardship.
