Messi has been included in Argentina’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Mauritania on March 27 and Zambia on April 1. Head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed he will feature in both matches but stressed that the final call on the World Cup rests solely with the player.

Argentina are set to begin their title defence against Algeria in Kansas City on June 17.

Speaking at a press conference, Scaloni said he would love to have Messi at the tournament but acknowledged the decision is personal. He noted that while fans worldwide want to see the star play, it ultimately depends on Messi’s physical condition and mental readiness.

He added that Messi has earned the right to make the decision without pressure, emphasizing that the team is not rushing him and will respect whatever choice he makes.

Messi has featured in five World Cups and won the trophy in 2022. He also holds the record for the most appearances in the competition, with 26.

The Inter Miami CF forward had earlier admitted that his participation in the 2026 tournament is uncertain, explaining that he will evaluate his condition during pre-season before deciding if he can contribute effectively.

Despite the uncertainty, Messi expressed strong desire to play, describing the World Cup as a special opportunity and a dream, especially as Argentina aim to defend their title.
