Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive that political appointees aspiring for elective offices must resign by March 31, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has seen heightened political activity, consultations, and speculation over zoning arrangements and potential candidates.
Observers suggest that emerging party dynamics favor zoning the governorship ticket to Lagos East. This has prompted prominent figures from the zone to engage in early discussions for the APC ticket. Leading names frequently mentioned include former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos East Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Minister of State for Health Tunji Alausa, and House of Representatives member Jimi Benson. Others under consideration include Hakeem Muri Okunola, Principal Secretary to President Tinubu, and former House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.
While party sources maintain that consultations are ongoing with no official pronouncement on zoning, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is speculated to play a key role, potentially representing Lagos West in the Senate as part of strategic party arrangements.
Deputy Governorship Slot Focus Shifts to Lagos West
Attention is also on the deputy governorship position, which political watchers say may be zoned to Lagos West to achieve political balance. This has triggered intense lobbying, especially in the Badagry division and other political blocs within the district. Party leaders are advocating for Lagos West, the state’s largest senatorial district, to secure the number two position.
Names frequently mentioned for the deputy governorship include Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole, former Oriade Local Government Chairman Ramota Hassan-Ijaiye, Lagos State Commissioner for Basic Education Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Chairman Prince Lanre Sanusi, and former Amuwo-Odofin Chairman Ayodele Adewale (“Lord Mayor”). Others in consideration are Samuel Ajose (SMA), Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adeniran, and Prince Wale Oluwa from the Badagry axis. Some candidates, including Adeniran and Ajose, are also being considered for possible federal appointments.

Political analysts note that several factors will influence the final selections for both the governorship and deputy governorship tickets, including religious balance, generational considerations, and indigenous representation. Speaking at a forum held over the weekend in Abuja, the envoy explained that boosting trade between both countries remains a key priority in her diplomatic mission.
She emphasized that her focus is on expanding the existing trade framework between Nigeria and Israel, describing it as essential to deepening economic ties and improving collaboration between both nations.
Ufochukwu also noted that her agenda extends beyond trade, including the promotion of Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investment opportunities, as well as supporting training programmes in cybersecurity and information technology.
She assured stakeholders of her commitment to fully delivering on her responsibilities, adding that sustained communication and cooperation would be important in achieving set goals.
Participants at the forum highlighted the need for Nigeria to address structural barriers affecting business growth, while pointing to Israel’s innovation-driven economy as a model worth studying.
One of the attendees, Pastor Henry Opara, called for formal bilateral agreements, stressing that most current business interactions between both countries are informal and based on personal relationships rather than structured government frameworks.
He argued that stronger government-to-government agreements would provide clearer rules and more stable economic engagement.
Similarly, the National Coordinator of the Nigeria–Israel Business Forum, Mrs. Florence Osuji, urged both countries to renew official trade agreements, noting that some existing arrangements have expired, leaving current trade relations without strong institutional backing.

According to a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also approved a special take-off grant of ₦15 billion to support the project.
The statement explained that the approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the academy, currently based in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
It further stated that the funding will come from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation and will be used for key infrastructure such as academic buildings, student accommodation, and essential training facilities.
A high-level meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the National Universities Commission recommended Erinja as the location for the new campus.
The decision was based on factors such as student intake capacity, funding considerations, academic standards, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Presidency stated that the expansion is expected to strengthen police training, improve institutional capacity, and enhance national security education across the country.
