“NPSA, CUPP Slam ‘Forced Consensus’ In Party Primaries – Demand Fair Candidate Selection”.

The Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) have criticized the widespread practice of imposing candidates instead of allowing genuine consensus in party primaries, warning that it undermines democratic principles and political fairness in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In an interview with Punch, NPSA President, Prof. Hassan Saliu, stressed that consensus is only valid when all parties freely agree. He noted that what often occurs in Nigeria is the imposition of candidates through pressure or intimidation.

Saliu explained, “Consensus is acceptable if truly agreed upon. But even a single dissenting voice breaks down the wall of consensus. Unfortunately, many leaders coerce others to withdraw or block participation in congresses or conventions, and that is harmful to democracy.”

CUPP’s Publicity Secretary, Mark Adebayo, added that candidate selection should remain an internal party matter. He said, “If a party opts for a consensus approach, it should be respected. When genuinely achieved, it can promote unity within the party, reflecting the true choice of members at the constituency, state, or local level.”

However, Adebayo criticized the way consensus is often applied in Nigeria, saying, “Frequently, someone at the top simply handpicks and imposes a candidate. This practice fuels internal conflicts and resentment.” He also suggested that the Electoral Act should allow parties flexibility to choose between direct, indirect, or consensus primaries.

Meanwhile, APC Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, defended granting incumbents the right of first refusal for re-election, arguing that it aligns with constitutional provisions. He stated, “The Constitution permits elected governors and the President to seek a second term, and party members must respect this legal provision.”

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
