“It’s Political Persecution!” – Peter Obi Slams El-Rufai’s Detention.

Published

on

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the detention and trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as political persecution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi made the remarks during a stakeholders’ meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna. He emphasized that the law requires that anyone accused of wrongdoing must be treated with dignity until proven guilty:

“It is political persecution. We have a law, and that law allows for people to be treated with dignity until they are found guilty. Let our law prevail.
How do you tell somebody you’re inviting him, and he came back voluntarily to the country, and you’re treating him like somebody who was running away? Let the law run its course. I have said it, I’ve written about it, and I continue to say so.”

Obi and El-Rufai recently joined the ADC amid a wave of political defections aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. The development signals a shift in their political relationship, as El-Rufai had previously been one of Obi’s most vocal critics during the 2023 presidential race.

The controversy surrounding El-Rufai began on February 12, when security operatives attempted to arrest him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, upon his return from Cairo. According to his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai declined to accompany them due to the absence of a formal invitation.

On February 16, El-Rufai voluntarily presented himself at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters. He was later transferred to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on February 19. A magistrate court extended his remand order for an additional 14 days on March 5.

The situation has drawn widespread calls for either his release or formal arraignment. El-Rufai has also filed a fundamental rights suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging both the search of his residence and the remand order. The ICPC, the chief magistrate who issued the remand, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Attorney-General of the Federation are listed as respondents.

On Tuesday morning, the former governor arrived at the Federal High Court in Kaduna for his arraignment.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
