“PPDF Urges Akwa Ibom And Cross River Govs To Fast-Track WASH Projects Now”.
As Nigeria marks the 2026 World Water Day (WWD), the civil society organisation Peace Point Development Foundation (PPDF) has called on the Akwa Ibom and Cross River governments to adopt sustainable financing models to ensure the effective implementation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The appeal was made in a statement by PPDF Coordinator, Umo Isua-Ikoh, on Sunday, commemorating the 2026 WWD theme: “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.”
Isua-Ikoh highlighted that the theme underscores the challenges women and girls in water-scarce communities face, noting that inadequate access to safe water continues to affect their health, dignity, education, and economic opportunities.
He expressed concern that, nearly a year after approval, sanitation and hygiene facilities in some Akwa Ibom local governments—including Obot Akara, Ikono, Esit Eket, and Nsit Ubium—are yet to be commissioned.
“The lack of safe and private sanitation facilities, especially in schools and public spaces, continues to impact women and girls,” he said.
He further urged the states to consolidate environmental health functions for better coordination, improve waste management systems, intensify grassroots hygiene education, and pursue Open Defecation-Free (ODF) targets.
While acknowledging initiatives by Akwa Ibom State Government—such as the approval of the State WASH Policy, Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, ODF Roadmap, and the 2022 Water Sector Law—he expressed concern over slow project implementation.
Isua-Ikoh called on both governments to establish functional WASH departments in all local government areas, set up regulatory bodies, provide inclusive sanitation infrastructure in schools and public spaces, release funds promptly, and ensure efficient waste disposal systems.
